The Count

We’re sitting down to dinner and I ask Jessica if she can count – why? Because it’s something to distract her from the fact that the food is not in front of her NOW.
So she starts to count …
One
Two
Three
Four
Five
Six
Seven!
Eight.
At Four my mouth was agape as I watched in wonder because she’s never said the number four out loud. As far as I knew she still thought two and three were the same thing.
At Seven! I was sure she was done and I couldn’t wait to tell everyone I knew that my child just counted in succession to Seven! (the exclamation point was hers, she was very excited about the number Seven) and then came Eight. and I was sure I was hearing things.
One to Eight. She can count. I’m the big dumb dumby, here’s your dinner – the adult humans who amuse you all day will shut up now.
