[how to] make shaped marshmallows

marshmallows

You first make the marshmallows but during the boil sugar/water part – you add coloring. I dumped A LOT of red in mine.

Red marshmallows.

Then you recruit help once the mallows are set, sugar up the counter and hand out some cookie cutters.

As you can see my very RED simple sugar turned a nice pink once all was said and done. Perfect for Valentines Day.

We used: heart, star, crown, flower and clover shaped cookie cutters. Our cookie cutters weren’t quite as deep as the marshmallows so it took some arm strength to push it all the way through – after it got tiring for the kids I went to just making 1 inch squares.

I think about these floating in hot cocoa and I smile without knowing it. Pink marshmallows, it’s the little things.

May your Saint Valentines Day be just a little cheerier.

A Make Up Tutorial from someone who has no idea.

Unedited photos.

I am not an expert. This is just my process and the products I use – I keep it simple, because I’m stupid where makeup is concerned. Enjoy!

Products I use:

Almay Smart Shade Concealer, Medium, Aveda’s 942 Illumination eye color AND 944 Lemon Spice eye color (the numbers are important), L’Oreal’s Perfect Pencil in brown, Covergirl Exact Eyelights in blue.

This is what I start with every morning. Dark circles and eyes that disappear. My first step is applying under eye concealer. (I don’t use foundation or a color correcting cream or … anything. I like my freckles.)

step 1

I dab a bit underneath my eyes, then use a sponge to work it into my skin.

Just the concealer alone makes a world of difference. You there, with the coffee in your hand and the baby at your feet? Or the cat at your feet? Or anything, you look tired. Buy concealer. Your world was just rocked.

After concealer I apply eye shadow.

I usually use the more nude of my colors (Lemon Spice), I use the wrong brush (it’s what I have) and I just apply to my lid. However it is that it gets on there is fine with me.

I use a larger brush to “blend” if I use more than one color on my lids – but I usually do this no matter what – just makes it even on my lids and I try to brush out towards my ears … a little shimmer up in an arc keeps the eyes looking awake. I’ve heard.

Who farted?

Kidding.

Lastly, I apply eye liner then mascara.

I play with my eye liner the most. Some days it’s super thick and angsty. Other days it’s barely there. But it’s always there. Eye liner is what makes my eyes look alive. Mascara just makes them pop.

Then mascara!

I only ever put mascara on my top lashes – it transfers on it’s own to the bottom ones.

There you have it. Very yellowed shots of how I apply my make up. I could probably use some concealer around my nose once in a while. On the tip of my chin. My brow. If I’m feeling like it – I might touch things up, but mostly I just leave it to this.

I’d love to venture into the colored eye shadow one of these days but I just don’t know how. And then I feel like a clown with 4 different colors in the wrong spots and shades on my eyes. You there, with the purple? You’re amazing. Rock it. Teach me.

And lips? Please. Lipstick feels like jail. Chapstick feels like oil. You have secrets, I know you do. Spill it. I’m all ears.

You can make your own Chai Concentrate. [recipe]

Tomorrow: chai. Can you dig it @cofactory?

Tis the season for some Chai! (You might have seen it here before) and today I give to you the recipe!

Homemade Chai Concentrate
Recipe Type: Drink
Author: Jodi Schaap
Prep time: 5 mins
Cook time: 30 mins
Total time: 35 mins
Serves: 12
Easy home brew Chai concentrate to enjoy on those cool fall mornings. Just mix with milk (I suggest Almond milk) at a 1:1 ratio.
Ingredients
  • 7-8 Black tea bags
  • 3 Cinnamon sticks
  • Peel of one orange (or zest)
  • 3 Anise stars = 1 TBS if stars aren’t in tact
  • 1 TBS whole cloves
  • 1 tsp fresh ground nutmeg
  • 1 Vanilla bean = 1/2 TBS extract
  • 8 Cardamom pods
  • 1/4 C brown sugar
  • 1 TBS honey
  • 1/2 TBS peppercorns (or some fresh ginger)
  • 6 Cups water
Instructions
  1. Add all ingredients to a large pot over high heat on stove. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to a simmer for 20-30 min. Let cool completely before straining and transferring to a jar with lid for storage. Will keep for one week in fridge.
  2. NOTES: It’s ok to throw the ingredients together without carefully measuring. Play with the flavors, you might like your chai a bit “spicier” so you could add both the peppercorns and ginger to a batch to see. When you strain the concentrate you can use cheesecloth or just a fine mesh strainer.
  3. Heat chai with milk at a 1:1 ratio to enjoy your tea.

Make your own brewed iced coffee

We used to have a French Press (moment of silence) to make cold brew coffee with …

And I still love cold coffee in the summer time but am trying to curb the habit of the coffee shop every day.

So, I have another idea!

DIY brewed iced coffee

You’ll need:

Coffee filters
Coffee beans, ground
Small rubber bands
A jug with a lid
Water

DIY brewed iced coffee. Bomb it!

I make coffee bombs for cold brew, that’s my solution. So in one filter I put 1/4 C ground coffee beans and then secure the top with a small rubber band like so:

Add 3 coffee bombs to my jug and fill with water.

Place the lid on and let it steep over night in the fridge – right after you fill it up it’ll start to “brew”.

When you wake up in the morning and it’s already 95 degree’s outside you’ll kiss that little jug of black-gold with an open mouth. It’s ok, we won’t watch.

Add a little creamer (or not!) and sip away.

Enjoy! Please Pin away, share and like. This needs to be shouted from the mountaintops, obviously.

How are you surviving your summer heat? Any fun drinks or oldie’s you run to in this weather?

A free night

A free night on my calendar and immediately I’m plotting how to get the husband excited about a little DIY. Is tonight the night for painting? Maybe putting in that fire pit? YARD WORK! I know, I know: we’ll demo the bathroom. Paint the kitchen cabinets. GO TO A FLEA MARKET?!?!

Gone are the evenings of sitting on the couch catching up on Friday Night Lights or renting endless movies off iTunes. We have a life. That life is a house.

Should we plant a garden? Rent a wood chipper? Hang a tire swing? Have a family game night? Outdoor movie?

ShouldwedoanythingI’vepinnedonpinterestatanypointwhatsoever ::: BREATHE ::: becauseIcannotstopsomeonehelpme?

I have a passion, it turns out, for carpentry and devouring home improvement.

Your junk pile is not safe, it’s not off limits. I will hunt it, scour it’s goodness, save items and repurpose them.

I eat broken chairs for breakfast. Snacks? Are baby coffee tables, light fixtures and vinyl stick tiles. Dinner, as it turns out, might as well be one entrée after another of painting, demoing, and more painting. Dessert is obviously photographing and blogging about it all. Because, you guys. I mean. I just.

My husband likes a good scotch and a great book, someone send him a survival kit.

Until then, we’re donning paint shirts and endless color pallets. We swing hammers, slick brushes, topple bookcases.

All our love, we wish you were here!

Milkshakes? Or whiskey margaritas? #love
